Mass.— A Belchertown woman is dead after allegedly driving a vehicle into a hotel and shooting a guest before turning the gun on herself, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities identified the suspect as 27-year-old Olive Openshaw of Belchertown, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office confirmed Thursday.
Officials said the incident began around 1 a.m. when police were called to the Sturbridge Plaza Hotel at 400 Haynes Street after reports of a vehicle being driven into the building. Additional calls reported shots fired inside the hotel, with one guest struck by gunfire.
Investigators say Openshaw drove her vehicle into the hotel before opening fire and striking a guest who was not believed to be her intended target. According to the district attorney’s office, she was reportedly searching for two individuals known to her at the time of the incident.
When officers arrived at the scene, they attempted to make contact and de-escalate the situation. However, officials say Openshaw died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before she could be taken into custody.
The injured hotel guest was transported to Harrington Hospital before being airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center–Lakeside. Authorities said the victim remains in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing as law enforcement continues to review evidence and determine the full sequence of events leading up to the shooting and crash.
